After six years and sales of nearly 800,000 units of the outgoing model, the new generation Caddy range promises to be more economical to run, with more safety features, enhanced quality and refinement, plus improved environmental credentials. These improvements aim to continue the Caddy’s success as one of Volkswagen’s best-selling models around the world – even as far away as Australia.

Visually, the new generation models are refreshed with the latest frontal styling found across all new Volkswagens, such as the latest Polo and Transporter. There are also new rear light clusters, plus roof rails available for the first time, and the option of cornering lights. It is a similar story inside, where new instruments, steering wheels and audio/navigation systems plus the option of Bluetooth connectivity enhance the Caddy range with more quality and style.

Under the bonnet there is a completely new range of four of Volkswagen’s latest common rail, four-cylinder TDI engines which are up to 13 per cent more fuel-efficient. This includes two 1.6-litre TDI engines producing 75 PS and 102 PS, plus two 2.0-litre TDI units producing 110 PS and 140 PS. These are quieter, more refined and economical, with cleaner Euro5 emissions. Other new features introduced to the new generation Caddy include Volkswagen’s latest seven-speed DSG gearbox and 4MOTION four-wheel drive.

BlueMotion Technology models will now be available in the van and passenger-carrying models with the 1.6-litre engine, offering the ultimate in economy and low emissions. These use Start/Stop and battery regeneration systems to help deliver carbon dioxide emissions of as low as 129 g/km and an average fuel consumption of up to 57 mpg, giving a potential range of up to 735 miles on one tank of fuel.

The new generation Caddy range will have ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) standard on every model. Other new safety features include daytime running function for the headlights and automatic activation of the hazard warning under emergency braking.

The seven-seat Caddy Maxi Life model will be renamed the Caddy Maxi MPV, and for greater flexibility and loadspace, the second row of seats in this model, and the five-seater Caddy Maxi kombi and window van, will be able to be removed completely rather than simpoly folded forward as is the case now. As ever, the MPV’s bench seat in the third row is also removable.

Full details of UK prices and specifications are expected to be released next month.

A new Crafter-based minibus from Euromotive is among the first in the UK to meet the Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) standard.

The approval was the result of almost two years of work by technical staff at Euromotive and a year working with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles to develop pace-setting features.

The 15-seater, which can be adjusted to accommodate as many as five wheelchairs using seat tracking, has a flat floor throughout. It features a Ratcliff tail lift, coach-style plug door and now meets upcoming IVA standard – which will become a mandatory requirement by October 2011.

"It’s a step towards us going for National Small Series type approval," said Euromotive’s Production Director Mike Jones. "It has meant a lot of work in conjunction with Kevin Varey and Mick Jackson at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles."

To achieve IVA, currently voluntary, Euromotive has worked closely with government agencies including VOSA and the VCA, but Mike said the work has been essential to not only get ahead of the game but to ensure there are no sticking points when selling into local authorities – the main target market.

"When the change comes to the old COIF [Certificate of Initial Fitness] and the new regulations become mandatory, many conversions currently in build will not meet these standards. There are some drastic differences in flooring, gangway width and other areas," said Mike.

The Crafter goes to Euromotive as a complete long wheelbase van but then has part of the wheelboxes removed, a false floor fitted and even the suspension changed, to Volkswagen-approved specification, before the seat tracking and seats, both from Rescroft, are installed.

The vehicle has independent heating from Eberspächer as standard, ensuring both the engine and passengers start the morning warm. The seating can be arranged in a large number of combinations with wheelchair anchorage points to suit.

Euromotive normally builds to order – to accommodate local authorities’ specification – and says lead time would normally be between six and eight weeks. It would also consider building stock for any Van Centre.

A total of 35 of the new 4x4s faced the ultimate shakedown, battling up 12,000-feet peaks and across 5,600 miles of South American wilderness to keep up with the competition-winning Volkswagens. The rally started in Buenos Aires, Argentina, crossed the continent to Chile, then headed back to Buenos Aires on a more southerly route.

The Amaroks were at home on the tough terrain in more ways than one. With an electronic differential lock (EDL), Off-Road ABS and Hill Descent Assist, they were built to cope with extremes. Not only that, but they were on home turf, being built at Volkswagen’s Argentine factory.

"We are thrilled to put the new Amarok through its paces as part of this long-distance challenge, the world’s toughest, before its official launch," said Stephan Schaller, CEO of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

As support vehicles, 20 Amaroks not only had to keep up with the Touaregs – which took all three podium places in the Dakar – but even to get ahead on some stages of the rally. Pushing through challenges such as the Atacama Desert, the world’s driest place, required vehicles and drivers to be at peak performance. A further 15 Amaroks were supplied as crew and press vehicles.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has released the first official images and more details of its new pick-up, the Amarok.

The Amarok, which will be available as a four-door double cab version from launch with a single cab model to follow in 2011, combines the robustness of a pick-up with innovative technology, high safety standards, excellent fuel economy and Volkswagen standards of comfort, quality and durability.

Production of the Amarok is about to start at the Volkswagen factory in Buenos Aires, Argentina ahead of its worldwide launch starting in its native South America in early 2010 and in Europe next summer, with first models expected to be in UK Volkswagen Van Centres in September 2010.

The Amarok has a generous payload capacity of up to 1.15 tonnes and maximum towing limit of 2.8 tonnes. Its 2.52 m² cargo area has the largest dimensions in its class at 1,555 mm long and 1,620 mm wide, plus a best in class width between the wheelarches of 1,222 mm, which means that for the first time on a mid-size pick-up, it is possible to load Euro pallets sideways, saving on space.

The official photos show the Amarok reflects the latest Volkswagen design DNA with frontal styling in line with the latest Transporter and Golf. It is 5.25 m long with a ladder frame chassis and will be offered with a choice of rear-wheel drive and switchable or permanent 4MOTION all-wheel drive.

For maximum convenience, the switchable all-wheel drive is engaged by the push of a button, and also has low off-road gearing.

The full-time all-wheel drive version is a rarity in the pick-up sector, and uses a Torsen differential to distribute drive at a 40:60 ratio to the front and rear axles for excellent vehicle dynamics and high traction, and also ensures that the wheel with the best traction always gets the most power. A rear differential lock is available.

Designed to tackle the toughest off-road terrain, the Amarok is offered with an electronic differential lock (EDL) and Off-Road ABS to significantly shorten braking distances in off-road conditions or gravel roads. At speeds of under 20 mph it also activates Hill Descent Assist to control hill descents by using selective braking interventions. Furthermore, the ESP Plus system includes Hill Hold Assist, which prevents the vehicle from rolling back by holding it in place on inclines until the driver presses the accelerator pedal.

Under the bonnet there will be a choice of two 2.0-litre fuel-efficient, Euro5 compliant, common rail TDI engines producing 163 PS, with torque of 400 Nm at a low 1,500 rpm, or 122 PS with maximum torque of 340 Nm from 2,000 rpm.

Both engines have a six-speed manual transmission and will have impressive fuel economy with low emissions to make the Amarok the first all-wheel drive pick-up in this class offering CO₂ emissions of less than 200 g/km. Like the new Transporter and Caravelle, the Amarok has a gearchange indicator to help drivers achieve the best fuel economy, which with an 80-litre fuel tank should offer a range of over 600 miles.

UK prices and specifications will be confirmed nearer the Amarok’s UK launch. The range is expected to comprise a standard model for customers who need a pick-up that is as robust and practical as possible, to offering all the latest luxury items expected for those using Amarok as a leisure vehicle. An extensive accessories programme will also be offered for the Amarok – from a styling bar and running boards, through a cargo cover and Multi-Connect load securing system to a selection of stylish alloy wheels.

The large and ergonomically designed interior is the largest in its class and in many ways resembles that of a Volkswagen passenger car. Easy entry, lots of headroom and ample legroom for passengers on the rear bench seat make the Amarok a fully-fledged five-seater. If only two people are travelling, interior storage space can be increased by folding the rear seat.

Key markets for the Amarok include South America, South Africa and Australia; in these countries, because of their versatility, pick-ups are some of the most sought after recreational and commercial vehicles. Thanks to its efficient drive technology and tremendous versatility, the Amarok is also expected to be a trendsetter in the contemporary pick-up class in Europe.

Volkswagen will be putting the Amarok to the test as a support vehicle in the tough Dakar rally in South America in January.

The New Volkswagen California

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles launched its extensively reworked van family – comprising the Transporter, Caravelle MPV and California camper – at the Frankfurt Show to an enthusiastic reception from show visitors and the world’s media.

Lower running costs, cleaner engines, car-like refinement and slippery new styling should ensure the new Transporter range ticks all the boxes for both business and private customers.

A new exterior sports more aerodynamic door mirrors and a revised front grille and headlight design similar to those found on the latest Volkswagen passenger cars.

Under the bonnet is a new range of four 2.0-litre four-cylinder common rail TDI engines, with power outputs of 84 PS and 220 Nm of torque from 1,500 rpm, 102 PS with 250 Nm from 1,500 rpm, 140 PS with 340 Nm at 1,750 rpm, and 180 PS with 400 Nm from a mere 1,500 rpm.

These engines are quieter, more economical, and more efficient with lower emissions that now comply with the latest Euro V standards. To encourage more economical driving, there is also a gear shift recommendation indicator.

The Transporter is Volkswagen’s best-selling model in the UK and worldwide. More than a million of the current model

have been sold since its introduction in 2003, making a total of over 10 million units since production started in March 1950.

New engines

There are four new, four-cylinder, 2.0-litre TDI engines: 

• 84PS/102kW (220Nm): five-speed manual
• 102PS/75kW (250Nm): five-speed manual
• 140PS/103kW (340Nm): six-speed manual or seven–speed DSG
• 180PS/132kW (400Nm, BiTurbo) six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG

These meet the Euro V standards with a DPF and oxidation catalytic converter. They have common-rail, high-pressure fuel injection and the BiTurbo 180PS has two turbochargers.

The BiTurbo 180PS/132kW engine is charged by two turbochargers of different sizes. At low engine speed, the larger turbocharger delivers steady charge but at higher engine speeds, the second, smaller turbocharger gives an additional boost. This guarantees optimal charging throughout the engine speed range, maximising efficiency. The result is a much smoother power delivery.

Benefits

Lower running costs – The new engines are up to 20 per cent more efficient than the previous Transporter's engines.

Reduced engine noise – The common-rail system halves the current engine-noise levels.

Reduced emissions, lower VED – On average, the engines have 10 per cent less CO₂ emissions than the previous Transporter's engines. All LCVs registered before 1 Jan 2011, which are Euro V-compliant, will pay £60 less vehicle excise duty (VED) for the lifetime of the vehicle. The standard DPF and oxidation catalytic converter result in fewer harmful emissions.

These meet the Euro V standards with a DPF and oxidation catalytic converter. They have common-rail, high-pressure fuel injection and the BiTurbo 180PS has two turbochargers.

How DSG works

The DSG transmission operates with two automatic clutches – while one clutch is engaged, the second is poised, ready to accept the drive for the next gear. This unique twin-clutch design means gearchanges are completed in under four hundredths of a second – in the blink of an eye. The driver can leave the transmission in ‘drive’ mode (similar to most automatic transmissions) or can elect to change gear manually, via the gearlever, pushing forwards to change up and pulling back to change down.

The clutches are wet clutches running in oil and use friction material similar to that found in a standard automatic transmission. Automated operation means they cannot be abused by the driver and are designed to last the life of the vehicle.

The scheme now includes eight-year-old vans. A customer with a van registered before 28 February 2002 can scrap the vehicle and use it to purchase a new car or van. Only cars registered before 29 February 2000 can be scrapped to buy a new car or a van.

The scrappage scheme will end in February 2010 or when the government’s funding runs out, whichever comes first.

The scrapped vehicle

The vehicle to be scrapped must:

• Be a car or small van that does not exceed 3.5 tonnes
• Be registered in the United Kingdom on or before 29 February 2000 (cars) or 28 February 2002 (vans) (vehicle categories M1 and N1 respectively).
• Have been registered to the owner for 12 continuous calendar months before the order date of the new vehicle
• Have a UK address on the registration certificate (V5C)
• Have a current MOT test certificate before the date of order for the new vehicle (or one that has expired no earlier than 14 days before the time of order)
• Have a current tax disc before the date of order for the new vehicle (or that has expired no earlier than 14 days before the time of order)
• Be insured when the order for the new vehicle is placed

The new vehicle
The new vehicle must be:
o A car or small van that does not exceed 3.5 tonnes
o Declared new at first registration in the UK and have no former keepers
o A UK-specification vehicle
o First registered to the same registered keeper as the registered keeper of the eligible vehicle to be scrapped
